Ingredients
channa dal / gram dal / kadalai paruppu - 5 - 6 tsp
pepper - 1/2 tsp
red chilies - 10 - 12 nos
urad dal - 3 tsp
salt - as needed
asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
crushed jaggery - 1/4 tsp
tamarind - 1 big lemon sized
peanuts - 4 tsp
curry leaves - few
sesame oil - 6 - 7 tsp
turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
mustard seeds - 2 tsp
Method:
- Extract tamarind juice by soaking tamarind in warm water
- heat a vessel with 1 tsp of oil and add 2 tsp of gram dal, pepper, 1 tsp of urad dal, fenugreek seeds and 2 red chilies
- fry till golden brown color and grind it coarsely. Keep it aside
- heat a vessel with 6 tsp of sesame oil and add mustard seeds, 2 tsp of urad dal, 4 tsp of gram dal, peanuts, asafoetida, curry leaves, 8 - 10 red chilies
- fry till golden brown color and add the tamarind juice
- add water. consistency has to be thin like rasam
- let it boil for 5 - 8 mins and then add the powdered gram dal mixture
- add few more curry leaves, crushed jaggery and let it simmer for 5 - 6 mins.
- switch off the flame and mix it with cooked white rice.
