Moong dal sambhar (Paasi parupu sambhar)

Moong dal sambhar

Ingredients (serves for 2)


Moong dal - 1/4 cup (1 cup size = 150 ml)
salt - as needed
turmeric - 1/4 tsp
tamarind - 1 gooseberry sized
mustard seeds - 1 tsp
urad dal - 1 tsp
fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
chopped onion - 1 fist full
chopped ginger - 2 tsp
curry leaves - few
chopped tomato - 1 fist full
red chili powder - 3/4 tsp
coriander powder - 1 1/2 tsp
chopped coriander leaves - 3 tsp
asafoetida - a pinch
oil - 3 tsp

Method:


  • Extract tamarind juice with two cups of water
  • heat a pressure cooker with oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and urad dal
  • saute it for a minute and add curry leaves, chopped onion, chopped ginger
  • fry till transparent and then add chopped tomatoes
  • saute it for a minute and add salt, turmeric powder, chili powder and coriander powder
  • mix well and add tamarind juice
     
  • Bring it to boil. Wash the moong dal and add it to the mixture
  • add asafoetida, chopped coriander leaves 
  • give it 3 whistles and switch off the flame
  • Serve with hot rice, idly, dosa, pongal etc.,
